Athens Main Street, Limestone County Commission Formalize Partnership for Courthouse Lawn Restoration

Athens Main Street and the Limestone County Commission have entered into an agreement establishing a partnership to restore and reimagine the Limestone County Courthouse grounds in downtown Athens, a project born of the devastation caused by a December 2024 tornado and designed to create a lasting community gathering place for generations to come.

The agreement formalizes the shared commitment of both organizations to restore and enhance the courthouse lawn, which suffered significant damage on December 28, 2024, when an EF-1 tornado struck the historic downtown property, claiming a beloved 100-year-old oak tree and more than 6,000 square feet of canopy.

“This partnership reflects what makes Limestone County special. When something knocks us down, we don’t just rebuild; we build better,” said Limestone County Commission Chair Collin Daly. “The courthouse lawn has been the heart of this community for generations, and this agreement is our commitment to ensuring it remains that way for generations to come. We’re proud to stand alongside Athens Main Street in bringing this vision to life.”

Athens Main Street, in collaboration with design partners Brad Mallette with AMBL Studios and Will Hargrove with Alta Planning + Design, developed a forward-looking plan that honors the site’s historic character while creating a more flexible, welcoming public space. Key elements of the conceptual design include grass-festival step terraces offering natural amphitheater-style seating, replanted native shade trees, including oaks and dogwoods, improved pedestrian pathways and permeable surfaces, new durable furnishings, and design elements that preserve sightlines to the historic courthouse and incorporate complementary materials such as limestone veneer.

“The courthouse lawn isn’t just a piece of property; it’s where this community has gathered to celebrate, to mourn, to reflect, and to come together for more than a century,” said Tere Richardson, Executive Director of Athens Main Street. “This agreement means we’re moving forward together with intention and with the full support of the county behind us. We’re grateful to the Commission for their partnership and their belief in what this space can become.”

The project is designed with sustainability at its core. Native plantings will restore ecological health to the site, and locally sourced materials, including regional limestone, will be prioritized throughout construction. The restored lawn is also expected to drive meaningful economic activity in downtown Athens, providing a versatile venue for festivals, events, food trucks, vendors, and performers.
