ATHENS, Ala. – Athens Alehouse & Cellar, a woman-owned business, is proud to announce the expansion and relocation of its operations to the historic building at 113 South Marion Street in downtown Athens. This significant investment underscores the vibrant growth of the community and the commitment of local businesses to fostering economic development.
The U.S. Census Bureau has identified Athens as the fastest-growing city in Alabama, with Limestone County holding the title of the fastest-growing county in the state for four out of the past five years. This dynamic growth was a key factor in the Alehouse’s decision to expand. “Our business-friendly city and community have been pivotal in enabling this investment,” said Athens Alehouse & Cellar Owners Ken and Lori Hill. “The support from various local organizations and government bodies has been phenomenal.”
The new location will not only enhance the downtown experience but also support numerous local events such as Fridays After Five, Summer Bash, Car Shows, and Christmas events, in addition to Alehouse’s special events like Athtoberfest and St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. “Small businesses are the backbone of any strong and growing community. We are excited to contribute further to the sales tax base and give back through fundraisers and donations,” noted Ken and Lori.
The relocation involves the renovation of a long-time vacant building, bringing new life to 113 South Marion Street. Athens Alehouse, which is locally owned and operated, has engaged primarily local contractors for this project. “The strategic selection of contractors reflects our commitment to supporting the local economy,” said Lori and Ken. “We’re proud to have Bank Independent, AMBL Architecture Studios, Martin & Cobey Construction, Dixie Electric, and H&I Mechanical collaborating on this project.”
The new building will significantly expand Athens Alehouse’s capacity, including the addition of a to-go window in the Square Arts & Entertainment District and over 300 square feet of outdoor seating with a picturesque view of the Limestone County Courthouse. The expansion will occur in two phases: Phase 1 in 2024 will see the current Alehouse move to the new location, maintaining its popular offerings in a larger space; Phase 2 in early 2025 will introduce a full kitchen, expanded menu, longer hours, and the addition of a full-service bar.
Celebrating its third anniversary this August, Athens Alehouse looks forward to continuing its tradition of community, true to its motto: “Where everybody knows your name.” The expansion will also create more hospitality jobs in downtown Athens, further contributing to the local economy.
“Athens Alehouse is thrilled to be a part of this vibrant community, and we are grateful for the unwavering support from Athens Main Street, Athens-Limestone County Chamber of Commerce, Limestone County Economic Development Association, the City of Athens, and the Limestone County Commission,” said Ken & Lori. “We invite everyone to join us in celebrating this exciting new chapter.”
Athens Alehouse will continue to operate at its current location at 111 W Washington St, Athens, AL, 35611 during construction. The exact investment and job creation numbers are currently unknown.
