ATHENS, Ala. – The countdown is on! 100 days from now, the streets of downtown Athens will be filled with fried food, football, fun and extra crispy special sauce! Put October 19, 2019 from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on your calendar for the 2019 Athens Grease Festival.

Fried foods are Southerners’ Achilles heel. We love to batter and fry standard fares like okra and fish, but we don’t mind expanding the technique to Twinkies and Snicker bars.

In Athens, Alabama, we have embraced our love of fried foods and the Greek origination of our name by hosting the Athens Grease Festival in downtown Athens.

Eating healthy is important, but we have set aside this time for our taste buds to enjoy the culinary creations we love to batter, dip and fry. Grab a bed sheet, create your own toga, and bring your taste buds to the city that knows how to celebrate being a classic, living Southern, and having character.

The festival will include music from up and coming nationally recognized; Lamont Landers! Other popular musical acts will include The Redeemers, Trippin’ Dixie, Kaledioscope, Lindsey Hinkle, Seeking Babylon, and The Prescriptions. Our very own East Limestone Marching Band will kick off the opening parade.

“The all-day festival will offer something for everyone! Top-notch bands, great food, quirky contests, children’s activities, a Fan Zone with big screen TV’s to catch all the SEC Football action will make for a fun day,” said Athens Main Street Executive Director Tere Richardson.

In the coming weeks, we will release more information on food vendors, musicians, event schedule and much more. Nominations for Athena Goddess, Grand Marshal of the festival will be posted soon.

Tickets can be purchased online through Eventbrite! If you do not want to pay a processing fee, click here to schedule a pick-up time at the Athens Main Street office under the Athens Grease Festival tab.
